The wines of the Penedes are made both from traditional grape varieties and from new varieties that have been introduced in recent years. They are predominantly young wines with great characteristic aromas.
White wines tend to be fruity and fresh.
Red wines are characterised by an intense flavor and aroma, as well as an intense color.
Cava, a natural sparkling wine, deserves a special mention.
The taste of cava (sparkling wine) is unmistakable. "Cava" is a wine for solemn toasts and festive occasions, for intimate and magical moments... Sant'Sadurni d'Anoia may be considered the world capital of this drink.
What's there to see in Penedes?
Romanesque art: of particular interest is the monastery complex of San Sebastia del Gorgs, symbol of Romanesque art in Penedès, as well as the Castle of Helida or Castellet and the monumental Olerdola complex.
Modernism is especially present in the settlements of Sant'Sadurní d'Anoia, Vilafranca del Penedès and Hélida. One of the best examples is the Cavas Codorníu, designed by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
You can take a stroll along the well-marked paths and roads. They can be hiked, biked or horse-drawn. It will be a journey surrounded by vineyards.

Route from Barcelona to Penedes
The Comarca of Penedes is located in Catalonia in north-eastern Spain, between the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona. Barcelona and Reus airports are the closest to Vilafranca del Penedes and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the main settlements on this wine route.
Alternatively, from these towns you can get to Penedes via the AP-7 toll motorway if you prefer to rent a car or make the journey on your own. The journey takes less than an hour. The same motorway, the AP-7, also connects Comarca with France.
