The Penedès region

D.O. Region Penedes is the largest cava producing region and the only one producing CORPINNAT, one of the largest wine regions in Spain of 30.000 hectares.
Cava & producing
CAVA is Spanish champagne. Until 1973, Spanish sparkling wines were called champagne. The European Union, however, banned the use of this name for all countries other than France.

The method of Cava producing is absolutely similar to the production of champagne. It was first applied in Spain in 1872 at one of the oldest wineries, Codorniu, thanks to the introduction of the French champagne technology.

This is a rather expensive method, as the best wineries use a completely manual method of remuage (turning and shaking the bottle), disgorging (removing sediment) and capping the sparkling wine. You can see it yourself during the event tour.
Corpinnat & the main local grape varieties
The main local grape varieties for Cava production are Macabeu, Xarello, Parellada. All of these varieties come from Penedes vineyards. Malvasia, Chardonnay, Garnacha, Monastrell, Pinot Noir are also used in Cava producing.

To distinguish the best sparkling wines made in the Penedes region from 100% organic hand-picked grapes, the Pened s sparkling wine producers have created the collective brand Corpinnat. It means born in the heart of the Penedes.
Production requirements

Corpinnat has set strict requirements for the producers of this drink:


  • Grapes of local varieties only must be grown in the Penedes area on land owned by the winery;
  • Vineyards must be 100% eco-friendly;
  • Grape harvesting shall only be done by hand;
  • All sparkling wines must be aged in the bottle for a minimum of 18 months.

Features of the Penedes region

The Penedès is one of the most famous wine-producing regions in Spain and Catalonia. The region is internationally renowned for the production of cava, a Spanish sparkling wine made using the traditional Champagne method. 90% of all cava is produced right here in Penedes.

There are now several hundred cava-producing wineries in the Penedès region. There are some real giants among them, the Fresenet and Codornio wineries, world leaders in the production of sparkling wines.

But our wine tours take us through small, family-run wineries where the emphasis is on quality rather than quantity. Visiting these traditional family-run wineries is a unique experience: you will walk around the winery in the company of the owner, who will show you the innermost corners of the winery, detailing all the secrets of the winemaking process

Your journey to Penedès

#1. Plant-museum for the Cava production
The first winery on our route is an unusual plant-museum for the Cava production. The winery master is the son of tailors and musicians. Has been working from the age of 14, by the age of 18 he opened his wine analytical laboratory, and at 20 he had already produced his first 500 bottles of Cava.
#2. One-of-a-kind Kripta Cava wine
In love with and passionate about Cava production, in 1978 The winery master created his one-of-a-kind Kripta Cava wine. Even the design of the drink bottle has become completely unusual. The bottle designers being inspired by ancient Rome developed an unusual amphora-shaped bottle. The label was drawn by the Italian artist Rafaelo Bartolozzi.

To create this sparkling wine, the following three grape varieties are used:

  • Macabeu that gives it a touch of elegance (the vineyard was first planted in 1962 at an altitude of 239 meters above sea level).
  • Xarello that brought fullness and flavour to the drink, the vineyard was planted in 1974.
  • Parellada, planted in 1969, brought the bouquet and notes of tropical fruits to Сava.
Kripta was firs awarded its gold medal in Bratislavain 1984, and since then it has received over 80awards at prestigious world competitions. In 2021, Kripta won the Best Sparkling Wine of Spainaward.

At this winery, the tour members will have the chance to taste delicious Cava with traditional snacks. The tasting there will be supplied with a variety of delicious snacks, such as the famous jamon, various sausages, cheeses and pates, tortilla and traditional tapas.
#3. A wonderful place & Сorpinnat
The next winery we visit was first mentioned in history on 7 January 1385, when Bernardus Leopardi inherited several vineyards located in the current estate in the Penedes region.

For centuries, the family has grown traditional Mediterranean supplies: vineyards, wheat and olive trees. At the end of the XVII century, the owners decided to become winemakers and commit exclusively to the sparkling wine production. Now they make Сorpinnat there.

The special climate of the region creates the required conditions for achieving an optimal sugar level, while maintaining the high acidity required for long bottle a ging.
#4. Wine tasting and gastronomy
Guests at this winery can enjoy tasting in several places: the cellar of the wine store, the old house of the master, and among the vineyards with stunning views of the Montserrat mountain. The tasting there will be supplied with a variety of delicious snacks, such as the famous jamon, various sausages, cheeses and pates, tortilla and traditional tapas.
#5. The last stop of the first day
The last stop of the first day is a five-star boutique winery-hotel. Guests can relax, enjoy spa treatments and wine therapy there. After the SPA, guests will have dinner at the hotel's gourmet restaurant. The hotel originated from a small winery with innovative ideas. Today this winery-hotel is one of the ten most prestigious Cava production factories.

#7. The second day of an amazing wine tour
On the second day, after breakfast at the hotel, guests will have the opportunity to taste Cava created right here and stored in the wine cellars of the winery-hotel. Then you will go to the winery producing Corpinnat.

Four generations of the family have lived and worked in this winery since 1885. Today, all the family traditions are maintained by the current generation of winemakers. Sparkling wine produced here is charged with energy and character of people, who are in love with their work.

There is also a museum of tools used for the wine production several centuries ago. The winery master Marseille, personally greets guests and introduces the winery and wines.
#8. This winery produces Brut Nature only
The next winery engaged in the Сorpinnat production is not just eco-freindly, but uses the
principle of biodynamics to grow grapes. This winery produces Brut Nature only. They even build houses for bats and insects here using special pheromones to lure them.

Corpinnat at this winery is agedfrom 2.5 to 20 years. At all wine-making stages theyuse natural cork only, while remuage and sediment removal isdone by hand. During a visit to thiswinery, you will see there muage process and uncork the bottle right inside the wine storage.
#8. Enjoy a freshest lunch cooked by an invited chef right at the winery
After tasting the winery's finest corpinnat, guests will enjoy a freshest lunch cooked by an invited chef right at the winery. Then the guests aretaken back to Barcelona and our Sparkling Journey ends, while impressions and memories will remain forever.
